What Does a Website Entail...

A website will need several things...
1) A domain name - eg. www.yourname.com
2) A hosting service - your website files need to be 'hosted' somewhere for the internet to find them
3) Your website

1) A domain name is usually registered for 2 years, then would need to be registered again like a subscription. You do have a choice to register from 2 to 5 years, but obviously the price does go up. The domain name (aka url) of your choice is not always available, for example my original choice for The EasyPC Company would have been easypc.com but that has already been taken so after trying a few names i finally ended up with the name that sets the standards www.TheEasyPC.co.uk

2) A Hosting Service needs to hold all your files, so when the domain name is told to point to your files, they need to point to a hosting server. Depending on how much traffic/visitors you are expecting, is weather what service is right for you. As a standard the first one in the list is usually more than adequate for most websites. If you are intending to host big files like programs etc then you will need a bigger plan.

3) You actual webpages are what the customers will see. You will need a main page... this is also known as your 'index' page, this page is the first page your visitors will always see. On this page you should show information about your business, brief information on what product you are selling, you business phone number, latest news, links to your other pages, and most importantly a welcoming message or slogan to keep your visitors and 'accidental stumblers' on your page to sell them your goods.

You should have a 'contact us' page (a bit self explanatory) and a 'sales page' (showing your sales in depth)

These are the "should have" pages in a website. If a website only has one or two pages, the website statistically proven will not keep a visitor interested for longer than 30 seconds. The more information and content you have the more chance the customer will stay and browse more.

Other 'less important' pages a website should have are, an 'about us' page to show the history of your business, i personally do read the history of a company especially on big jobs, for example if you are a customer looking for a carpenter, you are going to want to know the carpenters experience, previous work and examples.
You should also have a previous work page depending on your business.
A support and FAQ page. An external links page, this is because for google to rank you well, you need to have other website pointing at you with your link on their page, almost like a reference, but it is very hard to get other sites to link to you for no reason. To get another website to link to you, you will need to link to them. Again this is optional but if you want to be in the first page of google then this is needed in the start of a websites life line.
A testimonials page is nice to look at too, it shows you have good references and that your sales speaks volumes. A prime example is eBay's Feedback system.
If you own a shop, a 'find us' page to direct customers to your premises to improve business. A map which can easily be printed off is so helpful and does work.

There are so many more pages you can add, my best advice is to look at you favorite websites, youtube, facebook, ebay, etc etc, and make a note of all the different links you see and which would be useful for you.

* for google top ten ranking, we will need to discuss to see if this is possible as some search terms are not possible to hit the top ten. ie if you search 'Microsoft' there is no was you will ever be ranking in the top 10. So if you tell us what you think people will search for, for you to be ranking in the top ten then we can tell you if it is possible. This is also a 6 month project, due to googles page ranking system only getting updated every three months all depends on how quickly we can get your site out there to get you rocketing up the rankings
